Two Settlements That Became One Village
Rockton grew from two separate 1835 settlements -- Stephen Mack Jr.'s Macktown at the Rock-Pecatonica confluence and William Talcott's Rockton on the east bank -- that merged after an 1851 bridge washout and incorporated together in 1872.
Retrofitted Plumbing on One Side, Planned on the Other
Bathrooms in the older Macktown-descended lots near the confluence may have been retrofitted into much older structures than the homes built up around Talcott's original water-power site, even on the same street.
